What is Energy Deregulation?

Have you ever looked at your energy bill and wondered what you could do to make the bill lower? You’ve already done all the recommended miscellaneous changes to your house, but it’s just not enough. If you are looking to lower your energy bill, then look into energy deregulation. What is energy deregulation exactly? In a nutshell, it is a method of introducing competition to the electrical industry by giving you (the consumer) the ability to compare rates and switch to the best utility deal for you.

energy deregulationChoosing your energy supplier gives you the power to, in certain cases, switch to support a local supplier versus an investor-owned supplier. As with all decisions we make, it’s a smart idea to look into what you’re switching to. In some cases the supplier uses different methods for creating energy, such as wind turbines, hydroelectricity, or coal. Investigate the company and then choose the right supplier for you. Right now you’re probably thinking that there’s a catch in some form of a hidden fee. Suppliers merely supply the energy; your current distributor (BGE in Maryland, or COMED in Illinois) still distributes it and bills you appropriately. The fee for switching your electricity provider is absolutely free. It only takes a few minutes of your time, and the rest is left to us. Lowering your energy bill normally costs a good chunk of change, such as replacing windows or light bulbs. Energy efficient home improvements can be costly, unlike energy deregulation.

As with real estate, it’s all about location. Unfortunately, energy deregulation is only available in a select number of states. If you are not in the list of states that support these energy choice programs and would like to have your state listed, try to contact your government officials and vote for it come the next Election Day. Some states, such as California, have proved that this can be done. Finally, here is the list of states that do provide Energy Choice programs:
