3 Guys, a Dollar and a Dream!
On October 18, 2016, President Obama issued an official proclamation recognizing Minority Enterprise Development Week. He stated,
“Our Nation has always drawn strength from the diversity of our people, and no matter who you are, what you look like, or where you come from, America is a place where everyone deserves a chance to get ahead. This week, we must continue working to support minority enterprises and all entrepreneurs — and ensure that by expanding access to the networks, capital, and opportunities required to build a business, everybody can have a fair shot at reaching their piece of the American dream.”
Given that last week was National Minority Enterprise Development week, it seemed fitting to share my experience attending an event sponsored by Mayor’s Office of Minority and Women-Owned Business Development (MWBD) where our company was recognized as the 2016 Emerging Firm of the year. We were thrilled to receive such an award from the Mayor’s Office, but I was also grateful for the brief moment to reflect on our journey as a minority owned business. Ironically, 3 guys who came together through working for the City at the Baltimore Development Corporation. Three guys from different areas (Cleveland, Prince George’s County – Maryland and Baltimore). Three guys who each have different personalities and interests. Three guys who didn’t have energy backgrounds. Maybe it helped that we were only work colleagues and not friends who grew up together or attended the same schools or were even all the same age. Who knows what the secret sauce was, but whatever it was it has worked so far.
As we head into what hopefully is a tremendous growth phase of the company and bring on new employees, we’ll never forget what’s made this journey so magical, and how three guys from different backgrounds came together to capture a piece of the American Dream. #Strengthindiversity
